Floating through your imagination is a very apt phrase. Though I am not a Platonist, let alone a Gnostic, I do see the soul as akin to a series of ripples emanating from a core. This core is the light and the love of God imparted into a soul. Imagination is one of these ripples, or soul permutations, and gives rise to the ecstatic wanderlust that drives words into poems. As a wave floats through the ripples on the surface of a body of water, so does God’s light/love float through these soul permutations until we are conscious of it as a kind of ecstatic sense. We feel like we are floating, because literally this inspiration is floating through the soul to our minds and hearts. It continues to float through our minds and hearts to the words on the page, and that is the part of that light/love wave with which we are conscious at the time of writing a poem.
I can relate to this. There is this feeling of calmness within my soul whenever I write poetry. It’s like I’m floating through my imaginations.
